2012 IISSAM – International Institute for SoTL Scholars and Mentors – The Ecology of Teaching and Learning

from my POD listserv:

IISSAM – International Institute for SoTL Scholars and Mentors

The deadline for Scholar Project Submissions for the 2012 IISSAM at LMU is fast approaching: January 30, 2012. We hope you encourage your faculty to submit their scholarly teaching projects to IISSAM 2012 and invite your faculty interested in ecology and environmental topics to participate. Please bring the announcement/invitation below to the attention of your faculty.

A copy of this call is available on the IISSAM website and brochures can be requested at iissam@lmu.edu.

Loyola Marymount University (LMU) will be hosting the International Institute for SoTL Scholars and Mentors (IISSAM) from May 31 to June 3, 2012 in Los Angeles.

LMU on behalf of a consortium of universities* invites participants to come to Los Angeles to engage in thought-provoking discussions, stimulating presentations and hands-on activities, to learn in SoTL workshops, and to meet colleagues with similar interests and creative ideas.  Individuals or teams may propose a project to be mentored or they may attend as active participants at IISSAM 2012.

Deadline for Scholars Proposals is January 30, 2012; registrations opens in March 2012.

The call for projects  and other details can be found at the IISSAM website http://www.iissam.org; inquiries should be directed to iissam@lmu.edu.

The topic for IISSAM 2012 is The Ecology of Teaching and Learning. SoTL will serve as a lens by which participants explore what roles teaching and learning can play in helping students assume responsibility for the world we live in. Ecology and the role of teaching and learning will be explored from different theoretical and applied perspectives, benefiting from LMU’s leadership in SoTL, in teaching and research in Urban Ecology (CURES), and access to one of the few remaining wetlands on the West coast adjacent to the LMU campus (Ballona Wetlands).

IISSAM continues the tradition of the renowned CASTL summer institutes allowing an immersion into Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) work for new and seasoned scholars based on a process of mentoring work-in-progress by providing feedback and support in small groups of scholars with an assigned mentor. IISSAM 2012 also offers a pre-institute and sessions for administrators who want to explore the opportunities of SoTL for their institutions.

* IISSAM is organized by a consortium of Canisius College, Columbia College Chicago, Creighton University, Loyola Marymount University, Truman State University, and University of Houston-Clear Lake.
