Our good friend and esteemed colleague, Ellen Stevens, retired last spring after founding and leading the Center for Faculty Development at UCD for the last eight years. She brought visibility, humor, keen mentorship, equity, and a consistent leadership vision to her work in advocacy for the role of excellent teaching and all aspects of professional faculty development in the lives of UCD faculty – from workshop design and development to dossier and teaching skills review to SoTL (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) work and pedagogy scaffolding to classroom learning and career development. She will be missed, and we wish her all good things as she creates a new life!
Welcome to the new Acting Director of the Center, Donna Sobel – Associate Professor of Special Ed, in the School of Education and Human Development. Her concerns about the attitudes that teachers hold regarding issues of responsive teaching practices has led her to a series of investigations of teachers’ beliefs towards addressing the educational needs of learners from diverse backgrounds and with diverse needs. She is working this year – while a national search is being conducted for a new, permanent director – with the CFD Advisory Board, Kenny Wolff, Director of the Office of Learning Outcomes Assessment, the Academic Technology Support Team at CU Online, CFD Faculty Fellows Joni Dunlap and Mary Connelly, and me (Judith Coe), Downtown Denver Campus Faculty Director of the President’s Teaching and Learning Collaborative (PTLC).
Take a look at the Center’s website to see what’s happening this semester, to apply for a faculty development grant and to register for a workshop!
Please see the June 19 article from the News Room for more details.
All best and have a great semester!
